I may as well give up the ruse now that he's finally dead

Suing Big Tobacco and launching anti-smoking campaigns was purely a political move aimed at one man, Jessie Helms.

The anti-tobacco lawsuits began as a purely political ruse. Later, as it gained ground, it became a universal money-grab.

"More people smoke than voted for Clinton."

Remember that bumper sticker? Well, more liberals smoke than conservatives.

Smokers had known of the health risks of cigarettes for decades. States were raking in billions in tax revenues from cigarettes. To sue for medicare expenses was only hiding their own complicity.

I'm all for a total ban on cigarettes, but if you can't see the roots of the anti-tobacco lawsuits as directly related to attacking Jessie Helms, you weren't paying attention.
